A beginner’s guide to Leos Carax in eight YouTube videos

Leos Carax’s Annette, starring Adam Driver in an all-singing rock opera, opened Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews –take a trip through the rule-breaking French cinema anarchist’s career so far

In April, Thierry Frémaux made a monumental announcement: Leos Carax’s Annette would open this year’s Cannes Film Festival. While any Carax movie is a show-stopping, cinematic event, Annette promises to be extra sumptuous: an all-singing, all-Adam-Driver-ing rock opera with original songs by Sparks. In fact, the 60-year-old French director’s sixth feature – his current rate is one per decade – was supposed to launch at last year’s Cannes, and has been locked away so that it can physically premiere in the Théâtre Lumière. Given Carax’s propensity for big, bombastic statements, it’ll need the most extravagant, over-budgeted red carpet possible.

After all, Annette is more than a musical – 95 per cent of its dialogue is sung. With Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard starring as, respectively, a stand-up comedian and soprano sensation, it’s difficult enough to fathom what it’ll sound like, let alone look like. What’s for sure is that, if it’s Carax, an audacious, rule-breaking, transcendent two hours and 20 minutes can be expected. Note that when Wes Anderson programmed a one-off screening of Mauvais sang, he explained: “Leos Carax created a completely, spectacularly unexpected universe that was somehow exactly the place where I wanted to go.”

Annette is out in cinemas via MUBI on September 3
