David Lynch has been keeping his cards close to his chest since news broke that he’s working on a new series for Netflix — working title Wisteria, or Unrecorded Night — in late 2020. Hungry for more details on the upcoming project, fans have been left to piece together snippets from his past collaborators (see: Kyle MacLachlan’s enigmatic #wisteria post on Instagram back in March).
Now, Laura Dern has also seemingly confirmed that something exciting is on the way. Asked about Lynch’s mystery project in a May 13 interview with Elle, she says: “I think fans should expect more and more radical, boundary-less art from David Lynch. And I know it will make my life better.”
Dern is a pretty reliable source, too. The star of Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Wild At Heart has long been a close friend of the director. “We are very in touch,” she says. “He’s my family. I may have just enjoyed a cappuccino in his company. And he is never not making art. He is my great inspiration in life.”
Even Laura Dern, however, doesn’t know exactly what to expect from Lynch’s forthcoming work. “I have no idea what it's going to be,” she adds. “It’s not like I’m trying to hide it — he tells no one until he’s making it. It’s what I love about him.”
“I would say there’s a twinkle in his eye and he’s up to something radical and fantastic.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Dern reflects on David Lynch’s daily weather reports (she loves them) and his assertion that she’s “99 per cent fearless” (the remaining one per cent involves her refusal to shave her head for a role). “He did not mention any of the things that make up the 99 per cent,” she says, “but he may have mentioned the fact that I won’t shave my head in our recent conversation. I don’t think he will stop until I’ve shaved my head.”
In 2017, Laura Dern played Agent Cooper’s longstanding secretary Diane Evans, in David Lynch’s revival of Twin Peaks. Only time will tell if she’ll feature in the upcoming project, bald or otherwise.
