WEST POINT — The annual Chesty Puller Memorial Twin Bridge 10K is scheduled for Saturday.

Race organizers said there has been a record number of registrations for the race, which is in its 16th year. Nearly 200 people participated last year in what is one of West Point’s most anticipated events.

The 10K is named for West Point native Lt. Gen. Lewis Burwell “Chesty” Puller, the most decorated Marine in American history. Puller, who earned his nickname from having a barrel chest, was the recipient of five Naval Crosses and the Army Distinguished Service Cross, participating in campaigns in World War II and Korea.

The race is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. Registration is still available online in the no medal categories at chestypuller10K.com. Registrants will still get a race shirt, meal and cold beverage. Prices will increase on Friday.

Packet pick-up will take place Friday from 5-8 p.m. at West Point’s Food Trucks by the River and the day of the race from 6-7 a.m. at the start/finish line.

The first person to finish the race virtually —  Patrick Murphy in Durham, North Carolina — was recognized Monday on the event’s Facebook page. According to organizers on the event website, “we cannot wait to welcome visitors from around the country and cheer you on as you conquer the twin bridges!”
