NEW KENT — The New Kent Board of Supervisors has approved a request from a condominium owners association to allow the use of golf carts on some streets in the Farms of New Kent subdivision.

The board voted unanimously to allow golf carts and utility vehicles on some streets following a request from the Four Seasons at New Kent Vineyards COA, an active adult community.

County Administrator Rodney Hathaway said the application applies to streets in the first phase of the Farms of New Kent Landbay.

The streets include Rockbridge Run Place, West Lord Botetourt Loop, East Lord Botetourt Loop, James Blair Lane, Robert Dinwiddie Terrace and Southamptonshire Way.

The Board of Supervisors has allowed the use of golf carts and utility vehicles on certain designated streets since May 2018.

Andy Shine of the condominium owners association said he has been working with Hathaway on the golf cart request for more than 18 months.

“Our board of directors has also put together a list of mandatory things — brake lights, blinker lights, horns, a triangle on the back of the golf cart saying slow-moving vehicle,” said Shine, who has already bought a golf cart.

Signs would be posted in the neighborhood about golf carts being in use, Shine said.

New Kent Sheriff Lee Bailey said few problems have been reported in other golf cart communities in New Kent. He said neighbors typically report violators.

Violators of the county ordinance can face up to 12 months in jail if they breach the code three times within a year, Bailey said.
