School District 300 is in the midst of its annual school supply drive, the district announced this week.

As part of the annual “Stuff the Bus” donation drive, those interested in donating ahead of next week’s event can drop off donations or money. According to a news release, items can be dropped off at the District 300 Central Office, 2550 Harnish Drive, Algonquin, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Checks can also be sent to the district, made out to CUSD 300, and sent to the same address.

According to the district, Stuff the Bus is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 15 at the Algonquin Wal-Mart, 1410 S. Randall Rd. A D300 bus will be stationed by the store’s front entrance collecting donations and school supplies. The items are for the district’s homeless and low-income students. According to the district’s most recent report card, one percent of its students in the 2015-16 school year were homeless and almost 42 percent either received public aid, received substitute care, or qualified for free and reduced lunch.

District officials recommend donors give folders, notebooks, loose leaf paper, pencils, pens, scissors, glue sticks, rulers, crayons, colored pencils, markers, index cards, post-it notes, highlighters and gender neutral backpacks.

Anthony McGinn, D300 spokesman, said they would like to get 400 backpacks filled with school supplies. The district estimates they have filled about 1,500 backpacks in the six previous school supply drives, he said.
