12 shot in four hours

A man paced the edge of a crime scene just after 4:40 a.m. Sunday in the 2400 block of South Washtenaw Avenue in Little Village.

Nearby, paramedics worked on the man’s 18-year-old brother who had been shot. But the man was convinced paramedics couldn’t help his brother.

“He’s dead,” he said. “My brother’s dead. He’s (expletive) dead.”

The 18-year-old man was shot while he was walking south. Two shooters approached from a gangway and opened fire.

He was one of 12 people who were shot within four hours Sunday.

The man said he had warned his brother to not walk in the area where he had been shot. His brother didn’t listen.

“They can’t save him,” he said as he questioned why paramedics hadn’t taken his brother to a hospital.

Another woman, holding a plastic cup and a cellphone, stood outside the crime scene, asking an officer to ask the wounded man who he was. She was worried he could be one of her sons or nephews.

“He’s alive, but he’s not talking,” the officer told her.

As the woman tried to make phone calls to figure out who was shot, the man put his hand around her neck.

“He’s dead,” he said.

A detective soon arrived.

“Are you homicide?” the man asked.

“No,” the detective answered.

“You look like homicide,” the man said.

The 18-year-old man was listed in critical condition at an area hospital. Police later said he had been shot multiple times, from the leg to the head.
