WARWICK, R.I. — Police are investigating a smash-and-grab heist of at least 30 handguns that left a gaping hole in the entrance area of a local gun shop early Thursday morning.

Police said someone smashed open the front doors of the Rhode Island Guns & Ammo building at 1175 Post Road just before 4 a.m. As officers were responding to the business alarm, a thief or thieves broke into multiple gun cases and stole firearms.

Police said detectives are investigating “many leads” into the heist but did not release further information or any description of a possible thief or thieves.

The business sells firearms and also offers storage and cleaning of guns for customers. Owner George Zervas declined comment.

At the front of the business, on the Norwood Avenue side where a sign advertises “Parking for Republicans Only,” there was a large hole where the doors had been. Several men were inside sweeping and cleaning up the debris late Thursday morning.
