London, 1868. The Industrial Revolution unleashes an incredible age of invention, transforming the lives of millions with technologies once thought impossible. Opportunities created during this period have people rushing to London to engage in this new world, a world no longer controlled by kings, emperors, politicians, or religion, but by a new common denominator: money.

Not everyone is able to enjoy the benefits of this boom, however. Despite fueling the engine of the British Empire, workers’ lives are little more than legalized slavery while the top few percent profit from their labor. Living poor and dying young, the lower class unite in protest as a new kind of family, gangs, who turn to a life in the underworld in their struggle to survive. A struggle, until watchful Assassins come to their side and re-ignite an age-old conflict involving London’s leaders that will echo throughout modern history, from the underground up.

Introducing Jacob Frye, who with the help of his twin sister Evie, will change the fate of millions in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. Rise to rally and lead the underworld to break the corrupt stranglehold on London in a visceral adventure filled with action, intrigue, and brutal combat.

I am new to the Assassin's Creed series, but the game is very fun to play. I wish the developers provided better directions on how to complete the missions because I completed some missions out of order. It helped because I reached my highest level faster. The game also takes a very long time to load and the game automatically saves at certain points so you cannot save the game manually.I purchased the game last month and now I am having many issues with the game freezing and/or functioning incorrectly. Please see the pictures. I reported the problems with Sony, and I will update this review with more errors with the game.

I've been playing AC since the first game, and it's surely had its ups and downs. Syndicate is definitely a big UP. I actually liked Unity last year, I found the bugs to be minimal (relative to what people were claiming, anyway... apparently most of them were specific to co-op... I played all of those missions solo,) didn't mind the occasional sub-30 frame rate, and loved running around such a beautifully rendered version of 18th century Paris. That said, I'm loving Syndicate much, much more. As I'm sure others have mentioned, it's immediately noticeable that they dialed the graphics fidelity back a bit from Unity. I don't see this as a problem- the game is still very beautiful, and it runs much more smoothly. The city design and overall look is more reminiscent of the AC2 era in certain ways, and after the departures of AC3, 4 and Unity, it kinda feels like returning home again. 19th century London is surely the most fully realized city of any AC so far, I'm guessing it's also the biggest. It practically feels like a modern city, what with the carriage traffic and machinery everywhere. The huge Thames river runs through it from one to the other and is considered it's own zone on the map, like the separate boroughs. Syndicate also reminds me of AC2 in its overall tone, the atmosphere is very upbeat compared to Unity and AC3. Playable characters Jacob and Evie are quite likable, as are most of their various comrades. The Dialogue and acting are great stuff. Most important, the game play is the most fun its been since the AC2 era. For me AC3 marked a real drop in fun factor, and it's really only now with Syndicate that I feel like the fun is back to where it was in the AC2 games. I think the combat is the best its ever been since the franchise began, yet it's still undeniably "AC combat." Parkour is smoother than ever, the new zipline gadget it a boon. The only real criticism I can make is that it takes a loooong time to load the game when booting it up for a session, or restarting your last checkpoint. I wouldn't necessarily expect Syndicate to appeal to anyone who's already decided they don't like AC games, but I imagine fans of the franchise will love it.

It was widely regarded that Ubisoft was making a big mistake when they decided to annualize the franchise six years ago, and it's hard to argue against that when looking at some of the entries since then. But it's also hard to argue that they do occasionally still get it right with great games like Syndicate.

(You might notice that AC4 Black Flag is conspicuously absent in terms of being used as a reference point. It is by far my least favorite AC, the only one I played just once and never touched again. I can't abide trading in huge iconic cities for a lame "pirate on the open seas" motif. I don't reference it because I honestly don't remember much about it. I never even bothered with Rogue at all, though I'd be more than happy to if they ever release a current gen version.)

EDIT: I was only about half way through the game when I wrote my review. I finished the game yesterday, and I wish I could add another star. They really, REALLY hit is out of the park with this one. On three separate occasions the game crashed for no apparent reason. Yet I am somehow able to find forgiveness in my heart.

There were 2 reasons I was very hesitant to continue the Creed. The first and most obvious is the elephant in the room that was Unity and those bugs. I waited to purchase this to make sure the same thing didn't happen. Turns out that never really happened. Now several months later there are a couple bugs here and there, but no where close to Unity.

The other reason was the industrial revolution and the adaption of guns. Black Flag, 3 and Rogue use of guns was great! But that was all flintlock. Now with the industrial revolution and the technology I was very hesitant that guns would ruin Syndicate. I was very wrong. Now there are plenty of Templars with guns and it can get annoying at times trying to beat your way out of a failed sneak, but it's not horrible.

Now the story is pretty good, like all Creeds, and to me it was better than Black Flag, Rogue and Unity. I fell in love with 19th century London. The sneaking is pretty lackluster compared to previous games but isn't anything to complain about. The movement and climbing had been getting better and has been polished up. Unity had problems but syndicate just seemed like I didn't have as many problems with ramdomly jumping or climbing to a spot I had no intention of going to (you will still have problems). With that said it still has its problems, just not nearly as much. With Ubisoft taking the year 2016 off, hopefully they can clean this up even more.

Now my favorite parts were the train to ride around the map, the river Thames in the middle of the city was a nice little district that can be fun to swim or jump across. The rope gun is a fantastic addition to the francise! It is my favorite piece of technology in all the games! It's an amazing new and very fun way to get across the landscape. The game looks beautiful! It really seems like you are in London in 1868 (if I actually knew how that was).

But the best part of this great game is Jacob and Evie Frye. These twins make the story and game one of the best experiences since AC2 and Ezio. They couldn't be more opposite. If you want to just beat your way through, then Jacob is your man. If stealth and planning your attack is your Forte, then Evie is the girl to do it. The story breaks off and uses them both pretty equally. I love beating my way through the gang battles, but I seemed to gravitate towards Evie. Her skill tree is a pure stealth and makes the game so much fun! And Evie just made it a little easier to be stealthy because this game doesn't have much stealth to begin with.

Syndicate has its flaws like most assassins creed games do. However, syndicate just seemed like a breath of fresh air like Black Flag. The positives more than out way the negatives (which are few and far between). Unity made me weary of buying syndicate when it came out and I'm kicking myself for not buying this sooner. This game is for the AC player and for someone who is new to the Creed. This game isn't game of the year quality, but in my mind it deserves five stars, as the last 2 games (Unity and Rogue) only deserved 4 at best.
