John Elliott is no longer a promising designer — he’s now transformed into a fashion favorite and his spring collection solidified his standing.
The designer was bordering on giddy before the show as he explained the collection’s theme, which came from him running — literally — through Vietnam for 11 days.
“I wanted a Vietnamese color palette that was faded, cold and pale with military references,” said Elliott. “This is the most conceptual collection I’ve put forward and I just hope it’s cohesive.”
Cohesive it was. Misty-faced models took the audience on a sporty journey through the jungle wearing tonal looks — in shades of olive, white, blue and gray — that were composed with a mélange of fabrics and layered pieces that felt just right.
A linen pullover jacket with cargo pockets was worn over a French terry sweatshirt. A faded suede flight jacket topped a gray hoodie and a double mesh basketball jersey. Training shorts were styled with mesh overlay tights. It’s a familiar silhouette for men right now, but the use of washed-out tones and varied textures lent it a new life.
