The story of four teens’ friendship being tested by their inner-city Los Angeles neighborhood is what kept you most glued to Netflix in 2018.
The streaming giant on Tuesday released its own “Year in Review,” and among the highlights was a list of the series that enjoyed “the highest average watch time per viewing session (based on Stateside viewing through Nov. 28) — meaning, they’re the shows that you binged most intently, consuming lotsa episodes at once.
(For example, my biggest binge of 2018 was The End of the Fxxxing World, which I finished in two sittings, whereas Hill House took me about five sessions. But I’m also an old man.)
In order, Netflix’s biggest binges were:
1. On My Block
2. Making a Murderer: Part 2
3. 13 Reasons Why: Season 2
4. Last Chance U: INDY
5. Bodyguard
6. Fastest Car
7. The Haunting of Hill House
8. Anne with an E: Season 2
9. Insatiable
10. Orange Is the New Black: Season 6
Remember, a key metric by which Netflix decides to renew or cancel any show is the “completion rate” — the more who watch a season all the way through to the end, within a reasonable amount of time, the better.
Netflix also shared that of its original movies, “nearly 50 percent of viewers” (globally) rewatched The Kissing Booth and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, with Roxanne Roxanne placing third among flicks that merited multiple viewings.
What were your most intense binges of 2018?
Insatiable made the list! I think we’re guaranteed a second season at least, now.
You’ll be happy to know it was already renewed :)
I loved this series so much and finished it in two days. It was a guilty pleasure for sure, but I felt that it also had important social commentary to share with the world, and was in no way fat-shaming (actually rather empowering). I’m glad it’s on the list because it means there were plenty of people like me who gave it a chance and ended up loving it! Now, it really needs to be taken off TVLine’s Worst list. I love you TVLine, but your hate for this show was uncalled for.
On My Block totally deserved it. It’s the first show on Netflix I’ve binged more than once. Can’t wait for season two!
Too bad Bojack isn’t on the top 10. Binge the crap out of it every year. Such an amazing show.
Bojack is so weird and off-putting of a show, I wouldn’t expect it in a top ten list. A crowd pleaser it ain’t.
We are just watching Bodyguard now and enjoying it. I loved Dumplin’.
Is Making a Murderer Part 2 any good? I enjoyed the first season but got a bit disengaged after learning just how biased it was.
Well Brendan is stuck in prison for 30 more years so it’s very depressing. Not really worth watching since there was no justice for Brendan. They do get into theories and motives for other suspects, which was very intriguing.
I liked it better than the first. Must see!
it’s very compelling, but in a different way. we follow a new attorney as she delves into the details of the case and reveals so much more about the whole thing. i binged it in two days…
I loved season one and binged it. I only got through two episodes of season two and dropped it. I found it really boring.
What about Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? I’ve rewatched that show like a bazillion of times.
I hated the Haunting of Hill House!
I think this is the first unsatisfied viewer I’ve seen. Why did you hate it? Do you typically like horror?
To be fair, Hill House is VERY light on horror, is more of a family drama with horror tone.
Agree! I love horror and wanted to like it but just couldn’t get into it. We finished the series to find out what happened in the finale but didn’t binge watch. For me, the (adult) acting was way off, (but the kids shined)! I also felt the writing aimed at being more self important versus entertaining. Just my opinion, don’t hate me!
I loved it! But Netflix programs for niches so if you dislike 90% of what they make, that’s cool. They are making so much stuff now that 10% can fill your time anyway. That’s why they are making so much.
I watched the first episode of Insatiable but couldn’t get into it. Did it get any better? I was considering giving it another try just so I can look at that sexy twink Michael Provost.
It drastically improved as the season went on.
Problem is I can’t stand Dallas Roberts or those annoying southern accents.
I liked On My Block but I liked Everything Sucks better. I guess people aren’t ready for 90s nostalgia yet.
I’ve yet to watch On My Block, but I also miss Everything Sucks. As a child of the ’90s, the nostalgia was real. Sad it didn’t get to live on a little longer.
I can’t binge a show. I feel like I forget a bunch of it. :/
I’m old now.
That’s actually one of the main reasons I binge-watch shows!
If I try to watch a series one episode weekly, by the next episode, I’ve forgotten much of what happened. A 45 minute chunk of TV doesn’t get lodged in my memory, but chucked out with the nightly brain recycling. If I watch 3-4 episodes at a time, I’m ok to remember the plot a month or 6 later.
Of course, if I watched less TV, there’d be more chance of remembering recent short chunks, but I prefer the binge method, normally 4 episodes at a time, or short seasons of 10-16 episodes in two or three viewings, excluding frequent 2-minute toilet breaks.
Hahaha, I had a feeling Insatiable was gonna make the list and imagine my surprise when it actually did! Anyways, no matter how trashy it was, it was actually one of my favorite shows this year, the characters are hilarious, it’s over-the-top, ridiculous and actually has a lot of surprises.
Completely agree! I loved it.
Interesting that GLOW, One Day at a Time, and Grace & Frankie didn’t make the list. I’m assuming (and I could be wrong) that these appeal to an older audience (I’m including myself) who is less inclined to binge watch multiple episodes in one sitting. Of course, I can disprove my own theory because we watched The Kominsky Method in two sittings.
Viewers need to view all episodes to have the biggest impact. I don’t think you need to binge as long as you watch the entire season.
It also said part of the criteria was “the highest average watch time per viewing session” – so a show is more likely to make the list if it was completed in one or two sessions, i.e. a binge.
GLOW was nearly canceled after it’s first season. It’s crutically acclaimed but not super highly watched.
This is a pretty surprising list, to me anyways! I would have expected Haunting to have ranked higher (considering all the buzz it’s gotten since its release), and I didn’t realize that Last Chance U or Anne with an E were popular enough to make the top 10 (very proud of the latter, as a Canadian). Definitely planning to check out On My Block and Bodyguard soon, and maybe Insatiable if I ever have a chance (I’m curious, but there’s too much quality TV out there to counteract the negative things I’ve heard about it).
My American mother adores Anne with an E and is anxiously hoping for a Season 3.
Anne with an E was renewed in August.
I would imagine a good amount of Haunting of Hill House viewers might have spaced out their binges more because of the horror factor. I can binge horror all night, but I definitely have friends who can only take so much at a time.
I wish Netflix would do a version of this for each subscriber like Spotify does with Wrapped.
Where’s chilling adventures of Sabrina?
Not on the Top 10…?
I was thinking the same thing. Is it because it was a available late a not enough watched it end to end more than once.
I only watched Bodyguard out of these (and not on netflix). I’m very out of touch with what’s cool apparently!
Nothing worth watching except THOHH
Only seen 2 of these, Insatiable and Hill House. Never even heard of On My Block. What’s that about? Maybe I need to check it out
Is this worldwide or just US? As most UK viewers would have watched Bodyguard weekly on BBC I would have thought
The parameters are all designated above.
Watched On the Block in one sitting. Wonder when it’ll be back.
Happy to see Insatiable on this list…seems the outrage only encouraged more people to watch it. I’m happy I did..I really enjoyed it.
Also watched The Bodyguard in one weekend. Still to finish Making a Murderer 2…
Realistically I watched To all the boys 7 to 10 times from start to finish.
I love how people are freaking out over this. It’s most binged, not most watched. Stranger Things and The Ranch didn’t make the list either, and I don’t see either of those shows being in any danger…at least not ratings-wise.
I wonder how they determine the rewatched stats as people share profiles. So its not necessarily the same person rewatching a film.
It annoys me that they base it on how fast you complete watching. Most people work and have no other choice but to take their time. Interesting that Anne with an E is on there. I’ve never seen Netflix promote that show at all, I found it by accident.
The reason that bingeing matters is because Netflix probably has figured out bingeing correlates to subscriber retention. Otherwise, why would they care? Hanging onto subscribers and getting new ones is the whole point of their business. There must be a ton of stuff that Netflix takes into account that goes way beyond just “X people watched Y show.” Netflix can see everything everyone does. They are drowning in data, and their survival depends on their ability to figure out what matters in that data.
I have absolutely never seen any of these and definitely dont plan on it tried to watched insatiable needless to say I didn’t ney couldn’t get passed the second episode. Maybe my taste in shows is very very different than the rest of well everyone. But yet I have rewatched a million different series this year some even 2 o 3 or even 4 times :O no idea how you guys actually get these stats
If Netflix cancels Disenchantment….
It was just renewed for two more seasons, on top of the one that’s still in production.
I only binged daredevil and Sabrina. And I rewatched kissing booth and to all the boys multiple times.
