TIME’s pick for Instagram Photographer of the Year 2015 is Stacy Kranitz (@stacykranitz). Kranitz, a Kentucky native who now lives in California when she’s not traveling, publishes on Instagram intensely personal photographs that blur the boundaries between the personal and the professional as she documents the Appalachian region. The photographer uses Instagram as “it was intended to be used,” as one of her colleagues, Matt Black, put it: “To witness things as they happen.” For her, Instagram is “a sketchpad, notebook or diary,” she tells TIME. “It has become a personal archive, a collection of thoughts, moods and feelings,” she says—echoing the millions of people who use Instagram in the same way.” Discover her work and read our full interview on LightBox.time.com. http://ift.tt/1Yf34U7

Dmitry Balakirev’s (@dimabalakirev) shot of a circulation of sheep in Kazakhstan is among TIME’s pick of most beautiful photos taken by drones this year. “I
wanted to take pictures of sheep,” he says on SkyPixel, a new site hosted by Drone company DJI (djiglobal). “But they were afraid and began to spin.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The photo is one of many aerial shots entered in
what DJI calls the world’s biggest aerial photography contest, with a grand prize worth nearly $10,000. It’s hosted on their new site, SkyPixel.

TIME Picks the Top Magazine Covers that moved and delighted us in 2015, from Vanity Fair’s reveal of Caitlyn Jenner, to New York Magazine’s brilliantly conceived and executed Cosby’s Women, as well as Harper’s Bazaar’s dynamic portrait of Rihanna in a shark’s mouth and Rolling Stone’s stunning portrait of Adele. We interviewed the architects behind these covers, including photographers, photo and creative directors as well as top editors, for their insight on how they were conceived and executed.
“Looking through this selection, there’s no doubt that a great cover is a collaborative effort,” writes Kira Pollack, TIME Director of Photography and Visual Enterprise (@KiraPollack). “It’s a unique canvas where talented editors, art directors, photo editors, and photographers come together. With this unranked selection, we’ve witnessed that the cover still holds the power to be iconic and, at the very least, move and delight us.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ See all covers at
