Seth Meyers dove into Donald Trump’s foreign business dealings and substantial conflicts of interests on Tuesday’s Late Night “A Closer Look” segment.
Meyers highlighted Trump’s actions over the last few weeks, noting that since becoming President-elect, Trump allowed foreign diplomats to stay in his hotel, met with Indian business partners and, allegedly, pushed for the completion of a stalled business project in Buenos Aires during a congratulatory call from Argentina’s president. (Both Trump’s camp and Argentina officials have denied the last count).
Trump has also allowed his daughter, Ivanka Trump, to sit in on key meetings. Ivanka attended a meeting with Japan’s prime minister, which reportedly included a gift of a gold golf club for the President-elect.
“A bullying authoritarian who meets in secret with foreign leaders and receives gifts of gold?” Meyers said. “We’re probably a month away from Trump growing out a Saddam Hussein mustache.”
Meyers noted that although there aren’t laws preventing Trump from running a business while in office, receiving foreign money could be unethical and even unconstitutional, as a clause in the Constitution prohibits presidents from receiving gifts from foreign powers.
