A North Carolina woman just wanted to prove her husband wrong.
Glenda Blackwell was not happy when her husband, Buddy, asked her to buy two Powerball tickets last Saturday. She thought she would spend $10 on a Carolina Millions scratch-off ticket for herself to show him what a waste the lottery is. After all, the odds of winning the Powerball are about 1 in 292 million.
“I was going to be ugly and buy a scratch-off to show him they didn’t hit,” Blackwell told local ABC affiliate WLOS. “Sometimes I get aggravated with him, so I tell him, ‘You’re just wasting your money.’”
But when she looked at her ticket, it turned out she had won $1 million, the news station reported. Blackwell, 57, received an oversized check to represent her winnings and chose to take a lump sum of $415,503 after taxes.
Blackwell told WLOS that she and her husband have struggled financially, but now they will be able to buy their own home and help put their daughter and granddaughters through college.
“I had to eat my words, but they were worth eating,” Blackwell told the news station. “So, I was very happy.”
