At the end of last year, it was announced that in the forthcoming play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Hermione Granger would be played by a black actress, Noma Dumezweni. Though some fans were curiously hostile about the decision — “Hermione’s supposed to be white” was the theme of their complaint — J.K. Rowling herself soon came out in support of it.
And now, Emma Watson, who played Hermione in Harry Potter’s film adaptation, is also showing her love for Dumezweni. On Friday evening, she tweeted a picture of the two of them embracing in what appears to be Dumezweni’s dressing room.
In a Facebook post, Watson confirmed that she’d been to see the new play, which takes place nearly two decades after the series’ conclusion. “Some things about the play were, I think, possibly even more beautiful than the films,” Watson wrote.
She continued: “Meeting Noma and seeing her on stage was like meeting my older self and have her tell me everything was going to be alright, which as you can imagine was immensely comforting (and emotional)!”
Dumezweni also tweeted her love as well.
