Louie might be over for good. Louis C.K. told HitFix TV critic Alan Sepinwall that the show “feels very far in the past” and that he “can’t feel that show anymore.”
The FX show has been on “extended hiatus” since it wrapped its fifth season in May 2015. Meanwhile C.K. has been working on other projects, like Horace and Pete, a series C.K. made independently and premiered on his website in January. He is also producing two other FX comedies, Zach Galifianakis’ Baskets and the upcoming Better Things.
In his review of the Horace and Pete finale, Sepinwall shared his exchange with the showrunner, during which C.K. called Horace and Pete (which costs about $2 to $5 per episode to watch) the “best thing he ever made.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean Louie is off the air forever. Long breaks for shows have precedent: Larry David has taken long hiatuses between seasons of his HBO show, Curb Your Enthusiasm. David, who also created Seinfeld, has said he’ll only film when he comes up with a good idea. FX CEO John Landgraf said last summer something similar could happen with Louie.
“Louis is anxious to take a break and work on other things,” Landgraf told reporters in August, according to HitFix. “I think Curb is the right analogy. So, the truth is, I really don’t know.”
