Last summer, Stephen Colbert filled in as host for a public access show in Monroe, Michigan, and interviewed rapper Eminem, a Michigan native. On Friday night’s The Late Show, Colbert teamed up with another Michigander — The Divergent Series: Allegiant star Jeff Daniels — for Community Calendar, a public access show spoof based on Daniels’ hometown of Chelsea, Michigan, where he has lived for 30 years.
“These are actual events happening all this month in Chelsea, Michigan, and in greater Washtenaw County,” Daniels explained. Colbert added, “I can’t think of any county greater.” “If you can,” Daniels quipped, “I’ll move there.”
They proceeded to announce community events, including a fish fry, a morning bike ride, a maple syrup festival, two different hikes (one involving fairies and gnomes), a production of Alice in Wonderland, and a performance by local band Thunderwüde, which plays “bluegrass, funkgrass, slamgrass, and fungrass — everything you’ve come to expect from Thunderwüde,” Colbert said.
Also on the calendar? Family bowling night (“So if you’re bowling there at any other time, those aren’t your real parents,” Daniels joked) and a local pub’s maple bacon martini special (“Give your mouth a preview of what your hangover will taste like,” Colbert said).
