There were other people nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Movie, Comedy or Musical, in case all the buzz leading up to the awards show led anyone to believe that real-life best friends Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer were the only ones. But the award could only go to one person, and on Sunday night, it went to Lawrence for the movie Joy.
Instead of dedicating her speech to Schumer, Lawrence directed her comments to director David O. Russell, who has directed her to all three of her Golden Globes. “Every time I’m up here,” she told him, “it’s because of you.”
Lawrence then inadvertently insulted Russell—or at least, felt as though she did—telling him, “You make movies like you don’t even care if anyone ever sees them…I mean that as a compliment!”
Lawrence, who also bested Maggie Smith, seven-time nominee Lily Tomlin and Melissa McCarthy, acknowledged the movie’s inspiration Joy Mangano, her family and her home state of Kentucky, before telling Russell, “I want us to be buried next to each other, I really do.”
Only time will tell if Lawrence and Schumer find themselves facing off in the same category in a few years’ time—that is, if the movie they’re co-writing is as good as everyone hopes it will be.
