The Terminator is back. Box-office-wise, at least. Terminator: Genisys, the fifth installment of the sci-fi franchise, had a middling box office performance in the U.S. after opening ahead of the July 4 weekend. But it has proven much more popular with audiences in China, where crowds have flocked to see Arnold Schwarzenegger back in action.
According to Variety, after a U.S. opening weekend of $27 million (compared to Jurassic World’s opening weekend take of nearly $209 million), Genisys opened in China on Sunday, grossing $27 million in just one day. Sunday’s draw across 25,000 theaters was the fourth-biggest opening day for a U.S. release in China.
Terminator: Genisys has now grossed $335.1 million worldwide, with around 75% of earnings coming from outside the U.S. Next up for a possible smash at the Chinese box office? Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation—the fifth installment in another long-running, high-grossing action series—which will look for the same kind of performance when it opens in China on Sept. 8.
