In Tanlines’ new (and briefly, slightly NSFW) video for “Palaces,” the Brooklyn-based duo explores the what-ifs and coulda-shoulda-wouldas of modern relationships. Directed by Alex Karpovsky and Teddy Blanks, the brief tale of “I love you but you love him but he slept with them and they hate him” calls to mind the Gwyneth Paltrow rom-com Sliding Doors in its fateful moments and missed opportunities.
The video stars Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is the New Black) and Ben Sinclair (High Maintenance) and includes a nod to Lena Dunham—creator of Girls, which Karpovsky stars in, and Tiny Furniture, which Blanks scored. The song, off Tanlines’ recently-released album Highlights, is a wistful meditation on regret, the kind of melancholic electronic jaunt you dance to in order to expel the sadness from your system.
