It’s only been a month since Universal’s Furious 7 skidded into theaters, but Sony Pictures is already in hot pursuit of the film’s director, James Wan, for its own project: a live-action Robotech.
EW has confirmed that negotiations are underway with Wan, after Sony acquired the rights a month ago and locked down producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton and Michael Gordon (G.I. Joe) to write the script.
Based on the popular ’80s series of the same, Robotech will focus on society’s use of robot technology to fend off an alien invasion. The series was released in the U.S. by Harmony Gold USA in association with Tatsunoko Production Co., Ltd. and adapted from three original Japanese television series.
Wan co-created both the Saw and Insidious franchises and directed the sleeper hit The Conjuring. He is currently producing Insidious 3 and will direct The Conjuring 2 this fall.
