Character history[]

Creation and development[]

Sylvan Oyl was created by Larry Harmon Pictures in 1960 for the ninth episode of the Popeye the Sailor TV series. He was first featured in the episode titled "Abominable Snowman".

Biography[]

Sylvan Oyl is a big-game hunter and has a large collection of exotic beasts for display at the Explorer's Club. When Popeye and Olive visit her uncle Sylvan, they notice a giant display case that remains empty. Sylvan then explains that he intends to use that display for the rarest creature of all, the Yeti a.k.a. the Abominable Snowman. After Uncle Sylvan explains that no ordinary man can catch it, Popeye is intrigued by the challenge and decides to help Sylvan catch the legendary beast. They all travel to Mt. Idiot in the Himalayas (which got its name because the mountain can never make correct echoes).

Thanks to Popeye's help, Sylvan returns home to show his "discovery" to the world and puts it on display in the Explorer's Club. He thanks Popeye and Olive for all their help when the "yeti" is unveiled. As soon as the veil is lifted, the yeti on display begins screaming in anger, horrifying everyone present. It is soon revealed that this was just the prankster Popeye inside the stuffed yeti, who then thanks Sylvan for the adventure.
