Rep. Lauren Boebert wins Colorado GOP primary in new district
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) emerged victorious in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District primary Tuesday after she quit her 3rd District re-election race in favor of seeking office in the more conservative-friendly district.
The two-term congresswoman defeated five GOP rivals in the 4th District primary and held 43.8% of the vote when the Associated Press called the contest in her favor.
Boebert, 37, is expected to prevail in the 4th District general election in November as well. Voters in the Centennial State’s 4th District supported former President Donald Trump by a 16-point margin in 2020.
The 4th District’s congressional seat was formerly held by Republican Ken Buck, who retired from the House of Representatives in March.
In a Facebook post last December announcing her district switch, Boebert argued that “dark money” from “Hollywood elites and progressive money groups” was being deployed to personally target her in the 3rd District.
She contended that by switching districts, Republicans stood a better chance of keeping both seats in Congress.
Last cycle, Boebert came within 546 votes of losing her 2022 midterm race in the 3rd District against Democrat Adam Frisch.
Frisch had raised more than four times as much money as Boebert when she made the district switch.
“We cannot lose the third and Colorado’s Fourth District is hungry for an unapologetic defender of freedom with a proven track record of standing strong for conservative principles,” Boebert said in December.
“We have to protect our majority in the House, win the Senate and win the presidency.”
The 3rd District leans 9 percentage points in favor of Republicans compared to the 27 percentage-point advantage the GOP has in the 4th District, according to the Colorado Sun, which cited an analysis of election results from 2016 to 2020 conducted by Colorado legislative staffers.
Trump, 78, endorsed Boebert in March, calling her a “trusted America First Fighter” a “Proven Conservative” and an “Effective Leader.”
Over the past year, the congresswoman’s personal life has made more headlines than her political accomplishments.
She filed for a divorce from her husband of 18 years, Jayson Boebert, in May 2023.
In September, Boebert was kicked out of a Denver theater for vaping, singing, recording and “causing a disturbance” during a performance of the “Beetlejuice” musical.
Boebert and her date were also recorded groping each other in the theater.
She later acknowledged that she got “a little bit” carried away, noting that “it’s been 20 years since I was in the dating scene.”
