Mets’ reliever Sean Reid-Foley lands on injured list as shoulder issue returns

CHICAGO — Sean Reid-Foley’s dip in velocity during his last outing alerted Mets officials that something might be amiss with the reliever.

The right-hander initially had trouble getting loose for that appearance in Texas.

Following discussions with Reid-Foley in recent days, a decision was reached to place the pitcher on the injured list with what was termed a right shoulder impingement.

Reid-Foley will receive an MRI exam upon the Mets’ return to New York following Sunday’s game.

Reid-Foley also began the season on the IL with a shoulder impingement.

“It’s kind of the same stuff — it’s kind of in the front of the shoulder again,” Reid-Foley said before the Mets lost to the Cubs, 8-1, at Wrigley Field. “I don’t have X-ray vision or MRI vision, but I would say it’s probably an impingement.”

In 23 appearances this season Reid-Foley has pitched to a 1.66 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 21 ¹/₃ innings.

He allowed one hit and a walk in his Wednesday appearance against the Rangers and allowed two inherited runners to score.

Danny Young was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, giving the Mets a second lefty in the bullpen to join Jake Diekman.

In nine appearances with the club before his recall Young pitched to a 1.00 ERA.

Young was optioned to the minors June 13 with Edwin Diaz’s return from the IL.

Manager Carlos Mendoza welcomed the addition of a second lefty reliever.

“I like it a lot — especially what he’s done here,” Mendoza said. “He’s done nothing but his job and he’s got the ability to get not only lefties, but righties and provide length and he takes the baseball, so that is a good piece to have for our bullpen.”

Jose Iglesias’ reward for his 4-for-5 performance a day earlier was a start at third base — his first in that position for the Mets.

With right-hander Jameson Taillon on the mound, Jeff McNeil returned to the lineup as the second baseman.

Mendoza added another left-handed bat to the lineup in DJ Stewart, putting Harrison Bader on the bench.

Kodai Senga is scheduled to face hitters Sunday in live batting practice in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

It will be Senga’s first time facing hitters in over a month following a setback in rehab from a right shoulder strain.
