77-year-old Florida woman attacked by alligator in gated community

An aggressive alligator pounced on an elderly woman out for a stroll in her gated Florida community over the weekend, according to state officials.

The unnamed victim was walking near a retention pond in the Del Webb community near Bradenton when the assault took place, according to the state’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesperson Forest Rothchild.

A witness heard her screams and called 911 before yelling at the monster in an attempt to scare it off.

The gator eventually released its grip on the woman and slipped back into the water.

The 77-year-old woman suffered injuries to her left hand but authorities did not elaborate on the severity of her wounds.

Officials said a nearly 8-foot-long alligator was responsible for the chomp.

A witness to the attack kept an eye on the reptile’s whereabouts until a trapper arrived and was able to remove it, according to WSVN.

The alligator was later euthanized.

“There were no other alligators in the area fitting the size and description of the responsible alligator,” the FWC said, adding that they were “confident” they had the right assailant.

As of Monday, the victim was still hospitalized, according to WSVN.
