Baker Mayfield’s podcast comments about booing fans haven’t gone over well

The backlash from Baker Mayfield’s latest interview continues to mount after the Browns quarterback said he would “love” to boo fans at their jobs — much like he was last season during a sluggish campaign in Cleveland.

Mayfield appeared on the “Ya Never Know” podcast Wednesday and said, “I would love to show up to somebody’s cubicle and just boo the sh-t out of them and watch them crumble.”

Fans took to social media to troll Mayfield over his “dumb” comments.

“@bakermayfield is welcomed to boo at my job if I’m collecting a seven figure check,” one fan tweeted.

Mayfield, who has a guaranteed $18.8 million salary this coming season, was also likened to “an immature crybaby” by another critic.

“Baker Mayfield is softer than warm butter. Worse, he’s now in the same category as Sam Darnold. If someone in a cubicle was making tens of millions a year, I’m sure they’d welcome the boos. They wouldn’t be an immature crybaby like these two,” one user tweeted.

Another penned, “This has always been one of the dumbest takes from pro athletes. Your job is entertainment. You are showcasing a skill to entertain. That certainly doesn’t warrant hate speech or any form of violence, but shut up with the whining about fans booing. Fans don’t owe you adoration.”

Meanwhile, some fans were intrigued by the idea of Mayfield booing them at their place of work, even welcoming it.

“I would like to formally invite Baker to come to my work and be ‘a fan.’ He can boo, make signs, yell at the ‘ref’ (my wife)… I’m all for it,” a user expressed.

Elsewhere on the podcast, Mayfield said he felt “disrespected” by the Browns after they traded for and signed embattled Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson to a record five-year, $230 million contract, fully guaranteed, last month.

The Browns became an unexpected entrant in the Watson sweepstakes after a Texas grand jury decided against indicting the quarterback on criminal charges in early March. Watson still faces 22 civil lawsuits from women accusing him of sexual misconduct, however, and he could still face a suspension by the league as the lawsuits against him are ongoing.

Watson also avoided an indictment by a second Texas grand jury last month.

Though Mayfield remains on the Browns roster, the former first-overall pick is “ready for the next chapter,” and mentioned the Seahawks as a potential trade destination after Seattle traded Russell Wilson to Denver in March.

“I’m just looking for stabilization right now,” Mayfield said.

In the wake of the Watson trade, Mayfield requested a trade from the Browns, with the Colts as his reported first choice. Indianapolis later signed veteran quarterback Matt Ryan, who was traded by the Falcons.
