The Golden Globes are saying “goodbye” to having the ceremony televised on NBC.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will still honor the best in movies and TV for the Golden Globes next year, according to the Wrap, however, the show will not air on NBC in a live telecast.
“The HFPA plans to recognize the performances of 2021 to celebrate the great work of the industry this past year at the 79th annual Golden Globes,” a source told the outlet.
The report said it’s unknown how the awards will be handed out and whether or not there will be a telecast at all.
HFPA President Helen Hoehne and interim CEO Todd Boehly sent a memo to publicists and studios on Oct. 8 that outlined the new rules and regulations for submitting projects for award consideration.
NBC said in May that it would not air the show in 2022.
“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right,” the network said. “As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”
The ratings for the 2021 ceremony plummeted to an all-time low with Nielsen ratings recorded at 6.9 million viewers. The previous year’s show saw 18.3 million viewers.
Marvel star Scarlett Johansson called out the HFPA earlier this year as well over the lack of diversity in the organization’s board. The actress said it’s time for Hollywood to distance itself from the association.
She called the group “an organization that was legitimized by the likes of Harvey Weinstein to amass momentum for Academy recognition.”
“Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA,” she said at the time.
