Daniel Jones bounces back against Patriots — but it wasn’t pretty

Observations from the Giants’ joint practice with the Patriots on Thursday.

Better Jones

Daniel Jones had a much better showing on Day 2 of the joint practices with the Patriots. It certainly was not pretty to watch, and at times his pocket collapsed around him. Jones was able to get the ball down the field, however, most significantly when he found Dante Pettis running behind the Patriots’ defense and led his receiver perfectly. Jones then hit FB Eli Penny on a lob for a touchdown.

Toney MIA

It has to be disappointing for the coaching staff and front office to go through two days in Foxborough, Mass., after two practices last week with the Browns in Berea, Ohio, and not see rookie WR Kadarius Toney out there at all. Toney is getting ramped up after battling COVID-19 and dealing with a hamstring issue, but time is growing short for his ability to make a contribution at the start of the season.

Caught My Eye

This was all fourth quarter situational work, with specific goals for each series, such as two-minute, four minute offense, doing everything possible to simulate real game situations. At one point midway through the practice, the music was turned on and blared through the speakers, replicating stadium noise. It got really loud during one Giants defensive period, when a helicopter landed on an adjacent field.

Medical Report

CB Adoree’ Jackson was carted off the field Wednesday with an ankle injury, but the Giants said it is not serious, although Jackson did not practice Thursday. G Shane Lemieux, LB Tae Crowder and DT Danny Shelton are all dealing with physical issues. None of the three made the trip, staying behind to get treatment at the Giants’ facility.
