Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim tried to help man he fatally struck

Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim tried to give first aid to the man he fatally struck with his car on a Syracuse interstate Wednesday night, police officials said at a press conference.

“Mr. Boeheim did exactly what we would expect him to do,” Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner said.

“He stopped. He attempted to render aid. He even attempted to stop other cars that were coming over. He was cooperative through our investigation.”

Boeheim hit 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez on Interstate 690 at about 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday night after Jimenez had gotten out of a car he was riding in after it hit a guard rail, police said.

Jimenez was crossing the interstate after the crash when Boeheim accidentally slammed into him, authorities said.

Police do not expect Boeheim to be charged with a crime for the fatal hit and added that neither driver is believed to have been intoxicated at the time of the crash.

“At this time we have no reason to believe there will be criminal charges that will come,” Buckner said.
