Romine brothers make MLB family history

Austin Romine and his brother, Andrew Romine, started in the same game for the first time Thursday, with Andrew at shortstop for the Mariners and Austin behind the plate.

“It was cool,’’ Austin said after the Yankees’ 4-3 win at the Stadium. “We’ve been in the big leagues for a while and we’ve never had that chance to play against each other. I’d play, he’d sit. I’d sit, he’d play. This was the first time it all lined up and it was something we’ll remember. It was really cool.”

Andrew got the only hit, but Austin got the win.

Asked if he took a moment to appreciate the occasion, Austin said: “A brief one. We’ve got jobs to do and we both understand that. But you take a moment, like that first at-bat and we’re joking around a little bit, and then it’s time to work. That’s how we were brought up.”

Their parents — including father Kevin, who also played in the majors — weren’t at the game because they live in California.

“It’s a long flight, last-minute,’’ Austin said. “I mean, we both never really know when we’re going to play.”
