Silva to attend UFC 154, ‘maybe to challenge’ St-Pierre

Anderson Silva rarely attends events that he’s not participating in, but he’s making an exception for UFC 154 on Nov. 17.

The UFC middleweight champion and pound-for-pound king is scheduled to be in Montreal for the return of Georges St-Pierre, “maybe to challenge GSP if he beats [Carlos] Condit,” Silva’s manager Jorge Guimaraes said on Fuel TV’s UFC Tonight (via MMAFighting.com).

St-Pierre, the UFC welterweight champion, has been out for a year and a half with a torn ACL. A matchup with Silva has long been rumored and Silva has spoken about his desire for it quite a bit lately. At one time the two were regarded as the Nos. 1 and 2 fighters in the world, though GSP has fallen down the list due to his injury.

POST’S POUND-FOR-POUND MMA RANKINGS

Silva has never lost a fight in the UFC and St-Pierre has not been defeated since 2007. A bout between the two would be one of the biggest ever in company history and could take place in front of upwards of 80,000 fans at Cowboys Stadium. It would likely be at a catchweight of somewhere between Silva’s 185 pounds and St-Pierre’s 170.

The caveat here is that St-Pierre has to beat Condit to make this superfight alluring – and that will be no easy task, especially coming off an injury and long break from the Octagon. If he does win, it looks like Silva-St-Pierre will be even closer to becoming a reality.

“There’s no doubt that Anderson Silva showing up to cheer Georges St-Pierre on … he wants him to win this fight, and he wants to fight him after,” UFC president Dana White told MMAjunkie.com.

St-Pierre wasn’t as forthcoming considering he has a fight next week against another man.

“I don’t care about Anderson Silva,” GSP said. “He can do whatever he wants. He can go to Florida or stay in Brazil if he wants. I’m focused on Carlos Condit right now. That’s all that matters to me.”
