Mets’ Wright ‘excited’ by first rehab game: report

David Wright described himself as rusty, but the Mets third baseman doubled Friday in his first rehab-game at-bat.

“It felt good. It was obviously good to get back out there,” Wright said, according to ESPN.com
. “A little rusty, and obviously I need a few more at-bats, but overall, I’m excited about how the first game went. So far, so good.”

The report says Wright, recovering from a stress fracture in his back, scored from second base and slid into home plate following his double. Playing five innings for Single-A St. Lucie, he later walked and struck out swinging, his first live game action since May 15.

“From the first inning on, I knew at least that I could relax mentally,” Wright told the website. “I basically did everything that would have tested it right out of the box. … It put my mind at ease early. It was good to go from there.”

He plans to play seven innings against Lakeland on Saturday and could return to the major-league Mets by July 22.

“It was good to play the game again, good to be around a team, good to be around the guys,” Wright said. “It was a lot of fun, and hopefully we can build on this.

“Today went about as good as I could have hoped for it to go.”
