Rumble in the Bronx signals start of summer, AAU frenzy

The last three weeks have felt odd. It’s like I’ve been without a loved one. A void exists in my life.

What’s a reporter to do without basketball?

Fortunately for yours truly, Rumble in the Bronx is here – the area’s top AAU tournament over three days at various (and by various, I mean hundreds) – locations. In many ways, Rumble signals the start of the summer and the AAU season, for me at least.

The baseball season ends a week from tomorrow with the Mayor’s Cup All-Star game at MCU Park in Coney Island, while the PSAL and CHSAA championships will be decided by Saturday.

Though my itinerary can in no way compare to any college basketball coach, I will be busy in July. I plan to make three trips – to Philadelphia for the Reebok Basketball Breakout Challenge; Reading, Pa., for the Hoop Group Elite Camp; and Orlando, Fla., for the AAU Nationals. Before the live recruiting period begins, however, is this wild weekend in The Bronx.

It’s wall-to-wall basketball for all ages, from U17 to U10. Hundreds of teams from across the country will compete and there will even be four girls divisions for the first time.

Among the many top prospects on hand will be Savon Goodman, Kyle Anderson, Daniel Dingle, Kamari Murphy, Kerwin Okoro, Omar Calhoun, Jermaine Lawrence, Kuran Iverson and Austin Colbert.

It was a rough go of it for the city last year at Fordham – there wasn’t a team to reach the finals in any individual bracket – but hopefully with the main venue changing to Manhattan College, success can return to the area.

For a complete schedule, be sure to visit the tournament’s official website and make sure to check out NYPost.com over the weekend for complete coverage.
