I agree with the Dan McSweeny column, “Scrap History? Save Our Ship!” (PostOpinion, March 4).
The SS United States, owned by a foreign corporation, is about to be scrapped without an ounce of concern or care by our country. This ship is a national treasure and belongs on the national historical register.
With all the billions spent by Congress on their personal pork projects, why not rally behind efforts to restore this great ship to its original pristine condition?
President Obama certainly would earn points by backing this project, and it could create real jobs at a Philadelphia or Virginia shipyard.
Imagine this restored ship, perhaps berthed at a dock in the Potomac, adding another monument to the greatness of our country.
