ABUNDANCE OF RICHEST IN GOTHAM

Mayor Bloomberg‘s personal fortune is worth $11.5 billion, a twofold increase from last year – but that makes Hizzoner just the fourth-richest New Yorker on the Forbes list of billionaires released yesterday.

The mayor ranks 65th among 1,125 billionaires worldwide, the survey showed.

Of the 71 New Yorkers who have billionaire bragging rights, 23 new movers and shakers were added to the 2008 list.

New York’s top dog is oilman David Koch, with $17 billion. Financier Carl Icahn is No. 2, at $14 billion. Chanel heir Alain Wertheimer, who’s worth $12.9 billion, finished third, just ahead of Bloomberg.

Other local billionaires include News Corp.’s Rupert Murdoch, $8.3 billion; Ron Perelman, $9.5 billion; and Donald Trump, $3 billion.

Newcomers are hedge-fund honcho Daniel Och, $3.6 billion; Blackstone Group Chairman Peter Peterson, $2 billion; real-estate developer Richard LeFrak, $3 billion; Gristedes supermarkets owner John Catsimatidis, $2.1 billion; and realty mogul Jerry Speyer, $2 billion.

The youngest-ever entrant is Westchester native and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, 23.

He’s worth $1.5 billion and ranked 785th on the worldwide list.

Financial guru Warren Buffett was crowned the richest man on the planet, with a net worth of $62 billion, up $10 billion from last year, thanks to the surging price of Berkshire Hathaway stock.

He dethroned Microsoft’s Bill Gates, who had reigned supreme for 13 years.

“This amazing thing about Warren Buffett is that he did it at a time when he is giving away his money, 5 percent of his shares, to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,” said Forbes honcho Steve Forbes.

“As comedians say, only in America would you have the richest man giving away his money to the second-richest man,” he said.

Gates actually fell to third place, at $58 billion, although the co-founder of Microsoft still made a cool $2 billion last year.

Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim Helu squeezed into second place with an estimated net worth of $60 billion.

In 2007, Forbes calculated Bloomberg’s assets at $5.5 billion.

Forbes explained the sharp increase this year was an adjustment in its calculations after underestimating the worth of Bloomberg’s media holdings previously.

The mayor, who earns only $1 for his day job, has a 68 percent stake in his Bloomberg LP.

Stu Loeser, Bloomberg’s spokesman, said the mayor had no comment.
