ART’S DE LA CARTE

SURE, Gustav Klimt is an artistic genius – but have you tried his pastry? After you visit the Neue Galerie’s newly opened Klimt exhibit,

stop down-stairs at Café Sabarsky,

the museum’s posh in-house eatery, and order the most perfect accompaniment to an art exhibition ever baked: the Klimttorte. Now that’s artistic synergy.

It’s a luscious treat: stacks of firm, thin hazelnut cake (we counted five, last visit) interspersed with layers of smooth, dark chocolate.

A little shiny fleck of real gold leaf (yes, it’s edible) adorns

every slice – a lovely tribute to the artist obsessed with decadence and gold.

And of course, in true Viennese tradition, a dollop of unsweetened schlag is plopped on the side.

If you’re looking to truly lose yourself in the middle of the

day, how about a glass of bubbly – Sekt Schlumberger Brut –

or perhaps an elderberry soda?

The mood at the café is out-

of-this-world authentic romantic Vienna, with chairs that are replicas of those designed by architect Adolf Loos, marble tables and classical music.

What can we say? It’s a tough job, traveling back in time to mittel Europa.
