HEADS-UP FOR CYCLISTS

The city begins giving away free bike helmets today as part of a campaign to get New Yorkers to practice safe cycling.

The helmets, courtesy of Target department stores, were specially designed for New York and feature the Department of Transportation logo and an abstract street grid.

Helmets usually cost $30 to $100.

The giveaway begins in Central Park today, but while the 6,000-helmet supply lasts, anyone who wants one can call 311, officials said. Callers will be directed to the nearest safety center, where they can be fitted.
