ELIOT’S HOT POTATO

A press conference where gubernatorial front-runner Eliot Spitzer was to endorse his former aide Carl Andrews in a hot congressional race was abruptly canceled yesterday just before it was to begin.

The long-scheduled event was called off so suddenly that several Andrews supporters showed up to the City Hall steps with signs, ready to pose.

Several sources said Spitzer’s camp got concerned Wednesday night that it would look bad for the self-proclaimed reformer to stand together with Andrews, a state senator who has ties to convicted party boss Clarence Norman.

Andrews told The Post that he was tied up with Senate business yesterday, on the last day of the legislative session.

Asked whether it had anything to do with concern that he and Spitzer would get pressed with questions about Norman, Andrew said, “Absolutely not.”

He and Spitzer campaign officials said the event would be held next week.

But some political watchers still speculated that Spitzer’s team got concerned at the prospect of facing lots of questions about Norman.
