PIAZZA’S STILL ON ICE

MET NOTES

Mike Piazza walked through the Mets’ clubhouse with a protective brace on his left hand. He made it as far as his locker before ripping open the Velcro straps and flipping the brace into his stall.

It seems as if Piazza is headed for the 15-day DL, and veteran journeyman Mike DeFelice will be called up from Triple-A Norfolk.

“There’s a dull, cranking-type of aching,” said Piazza. “[I’m] not really able to do basic daily life stuff.”

Piazza was on the Internet trying to learn about the fracture of the pisiform bone in his left hand which he suffered on Tuesday night.

“The little research I’ve done, because there’s so many other tendons and things that go in there, it’s basically been smashed,” said Piazza. “It’s just got to get the swelling out because there’s so many other things that attach into that particular part of the wrist and lower part of the hand. And especially catching, you have to be able to snap and make quick movements.”

Willie Randolph said he thought backup catcher Ramon Castro could catch last night’s game as well as today’s matinee. Piazza said he’s impressed with the job Castro is doing but is concerned about the Mets only having one healthy player who can catch.

Castro continued his solid play. His three-run homer in the second gave Pedro Martinez a 3-0 lead. Castro’s double Friday night led to the only run in a 1-0 win.

When asked if he’s icing the hand, a frustrated Piazza said, “I’ll be in a scuba suit soon.”

Steve Trachsel is scheduled to pitch a simulated game next Thursday . . . Doug Mientkiewicz still has the flu and remains out of the lineup at Class-A St. Lucie.
