About this Role

The Athletic is seeking an explainer journalist to work with some of the best sports writers in the world and a talented team of editors to produce exceptional explainer articles that inform and entertain our readership on a daily basis. 

The right candidate will have entry-level experience working in the industry, a brilliant quality of copy and the ability to quickly gather facts and tell stories.

They will have a deep knowledge of American football, basketball and baseball in particular, as well as interests in other sports such as tennis, football, F1, golf, boxing and Olympic disciplines.

This is a hybrid role and we would ideally like the successful candidate to work from our London office at least three days a week. Applicant must have the right to work in UK to apply.

Responsibilities

    • Writing, editing and publishing explainer articles.
    • Quickly understanding challenging concepts and breaking them down in an intelligent, concise manner.
    • Curating the best content from social media.
    • Working with reporters to produce copy.
    • Collaborating with senior editors to expand ideas across formats.
    • Understanding SEO and best practices.
    • Understanding of trends – both on search and social media.

Requirements

    • Ideally 2+ years of experience in sports journalism, with experience on a national sports desk or media.
    • Expert knowledge of American football and basketball.
    • Must be flexible and collaborative.
    • Willingness to work unsociable shifts around weekends, evenings and big events.
    • This role will be based in our London office.
