A Rune Dictionary was a dictionary used to aid witches and wizards in the translation and understanding of runes. Students who took Study of Ancient Runes at Hogwarts used these book to decipher the meaning of runes.[2]

History[]

In 1994, Harry Potter also used a rune dictionary to help practise the Summoning Charm in preparation for the first task of the Triwizard Tournament with Hermione Granger.[6]

Hermione Granger was known to own a copy of one, which she used to translate The Tales of Beedle the Bard left to her by Albus Dumbledore in 1997.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

  • In both LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, rune dictionaries are carried by certain intelligent characters, who can use them to decipher runes in special rune bookshelves, which open up to reveal rewards in the games. They are small blue books carried on the side of the character's leg.
