These books were a set of padlocked, hardback books embossed with a phoenix symbol and allowed people to communicate with other wizards and witches over long distances in secret. Each page held a photograph captioned with a name, and worked much like a two-way mirror, and thus enabled Nicolas Flamel and his various allies around the world to keep in touch during the Global Wizarding War.[1]

Flamel using his book to contact Eulalie Hicks

In September of 1927, Nicolas attempted to use his copy of this book to contact Albus Dumbledore, to warn of events surrounding Gellert Grindelwald, but instead was only able to contact Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry professor Eulalie Hicks, who convinced him to take action in the situation.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • These books were apparently bewitched with Protean Charms. since when Flamel was flipping the pages of his own copy, Professor Hicks appeared in hers just as he flicked past her "portrait", suggesting that, like the bewitched coins used by Dumbledore's Army nearly a century later, all the people that owned a copy would experience some kind of effect to notify them that one of their allies were trying to reach them.
