On 5 December 1926, Jacob Kowalski, an American No-Maj applied for a loan of $2,300 from Steen National Bank, while he was working at Moreton Dale Canning Factory. The loan was to be fully repaid by 1931, over a number of fifteen instalments.[1] The loan's purpose was detailed as "business," in reference to Kowalski's desire to open a bakery. His application was rejected by the bank, on the assumption that such a bakery would not generate enough revenue.[2]
