Denver7/YouTube

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), of Beetlejuice gropefest fame, would like constituents in her new congressional district to know she was basically chosen by God to win Tuesday night’s Republican primary.

Speaking to supporters at a watch party in Windsor, Colorado, the far-right firebrand vowed to make the country a “righteous nation recognized throughout the world again” by bringing back “conservative values” and “Christian morals.”

“Tonight we had a priority, and that was to glorify and honor God. To praise the name of Jesus, to invite the Holy Spirit to be present, not only in this room, but in Colorado’s 4th District, throughout Colorado, and throughout the United States of America!” she said.

A British aristocrat and her boyfriend have been found guilty of perverting the course of justice after hiding the body of their newborn daughter who died as the couple were on the run from the law in the U.K., according to local reports Wednesday.

Constance Marten, 37, and 50-year-old Mark Gordon, were also convicted of concealing the birth of their daughter, Victoria, whose decomposed body was eventually found stashed in a shopping bag in a shed on the south coast of England in March 2023 after a national police search.

The guilty verdicts were reached last month but could not be reported until now due to court-ordered media restrictions on the trial. The jury at London’s Old Bailey was discharged last week after failing to reach verdicts on more serious charges of the manslaughter of their daughter by gross negligence and causing or allowing the death of a child, according to the BBC.

Reuters

Russia’s trial against Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich kicked off in a Yekaterinburg court Wednesday with proceedings closed to the press as prosecutors told their tall tale of a nefarious CIA plot carried out by the 32-year-old journalist and heroically thwarted by Russian security services.

More telling than the main show trial underway in the courtroom, however, was the bizarre sideshow that unfolded in the hallway directly outside.

One of the few Western correspondents remaining in the country, the BBC’s Steve Rosenberg, was badgered by a reporter for a local Kremlin-controlled news outlet.

When I first found out how expensive my wife’s favorite skincare brand, Ranavat, was, I was admittedly baffled. She’s used the brand’s bestselling Saffron Serum every day for over a year, and until recently, I had to bite my tongue every time I saw the pricey serum in our bathroom.

I’m a man of relatively few products, and the thought of spending more than $10 on something for my face seemed ludicrous up until a month or so ago. Then, my wife added a new Ranavat product to her lineup and convinced me that I, too, needed to try it. Spoiler alert: Ranavat’s Restoring Moonseed Repairing Treatment balm is equal parts science and sorcery, and I’m not sure I can live without it ever again.

CNN

Despite Donald Trump’s suggestions, no one seriously believes that there’s a chance that Joe Biden might be high on cocaine during Thursday’s presidential debate, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

The former president and his MAGA loyalists, as part of their long-running efforts to paint Biden as incompetent and physically unfit for office, have called for the Democrat to submit to a drug test ahead of the debate. Trump himself has outright referenced cocaine when discussing Biden’s prep for their impending showdown.

At a rally in Philadelphia on Saturday, Trump suggested Biden would get a “shot in the ass” before the debate and then “come out all jacked up.”

<![CDATA[Trump’s Endorsement Didn’t Help These Candidates One Bit]]>
Tom Brenner/Reuters

Republican candidates endorsed by Donald Trump were dealt primary defeats in several states on Tuesday night in the latest losses for the former president’s preferred choices this year.

The convicted felon and presumptive GOP presidential nominee saw his candidates come up short in Utah, South Carolina, and Colorado, despite his unrivaled influence over the party. The results follow other recent losses for Trump-backed candidates, showing that the endorsement many Republicans dream of doesn’t always prevent an electoral nightmare.

In Utah, Trump had given the nod to Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs for the Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Mitt Romney. Trump last year delighted at the “fantastic news” of Romney’s impending departure, claiming his critic “did not serve with distinction.” On Tuesday, however, his MAGA-friendly Staggs lost out to Rep. John Curtis (R-UT), who has been more openly critical of Trump.

Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

Let’s get one thing straight. It’s not a debate.

It’s a television show featuring two old dudes bragging about themselves and putting down the other guy. It’s Statler and Waldorf from The Muppet Show. From this pointless staged spectacle, we’re supposed to… what, exactly? Whose mind is getting changed by watching 90 minutes of this bullshit? It’s a rhetorical question but I’ll answer, anyway: nobody.

The fact is, if you don’t know who you’re voting for at this point, you’re a moron. These two white guys may share platinum AARP status, but that’s about all they share. I’m not going to spell out the differences between them for you because you already know them, but just in case you need a refresher: Joe Biden is the one interested in preserving democracy, institutions, our alliances, and our nation. Donald Trump is the other guy.

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Jules Monstera

Mo Welch spent years trying to make jokes about the father who abused her mother and abandoned her family without totally bumming out her audience. Now, she has perfected the art of the extremely dark “dad joke” in her new stand-up special-slash-documentary Dad Jokes.

In this episode of The Last Laugh podcast, Welch talks about how terrifying it was coming face to face with her father for the first time in 20 years after he went to prison for stealing TVs, and how she managed to thread the needle of turning that trauma into comedy on stage. She also reveals what she has learned about comedy from collaborators (and previous Last Laugh guests) Anthony Jeselnik and Beth Stelling, and tells the story of how she dropped her microphone in a toilet seconds before her late-night stand-up debut on Conan.

Among the jokes that Welch wasn’t sure her audience would laugh at is a bit from her new special—available to stream on 800 Pound Gorilla Media’s YouTube channel and website—in which she brags about the nature of her father’s incarceration the way others might refer to Ivy League schools.

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/Reuters

The first presidential debate of the 2024 general election is on Thursday. It starts at 9 p.m. E.T. which, fun fact, is only 2 p.m. in the fiery pits of hell!

It will run for 90 minutes but will feel like six hours and be moderated by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, but that is only because Satan himself had another engagement (he’s busy giving unasked-for parenting advice on Twitter: “I would never let MY CHILD watch BLUEY because SCREEN TIME will exacerbate his ALLERGY TO SYNTHETIC FIBERS.”)

The debate will air on CNN, the streaming platform MAX, and also probably on-loop in various interrogation rooms across the country as torture. I had thought we outlawed presidential debate rematches in the Geneva Convention, but apparently I did not read the fine print.

Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/Getty Images

A kind of verbal meme has been circulating among friends of Princess Anne in the Cotswolds in recent days, after it was dramatically revealed that she had been whisked off to hospital with concussion—having been either kicked or butted in the head by one of her horses.

Imagining that a doctor or royal flunky had dared enter her hospital room and suggest the Princess Royal ease up on her equestrian pursuits, the affectionate joke consists of imitations of Anne sitting up in bed and delivering her response: “Not bloody likely!” A variation on the theme has her telling the cheeky blighter to, “Naff off!”

Both immortal phrases recall, to her devotees—especially fellow equestrians in her super-posh, horsey Cotswold set who regard her as a figurehead—what they consider to be her finest qualities.

<![CDATA[Everybody Hates Ser Criston Cole on ‘House of the Dragon’]]>
Ollie Upton / HBO

Warning: This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 2.

Westeros, as depicted in House of the Dragon, is full of terrible people committing atrocities at every turn. The quality of life isn’t great; childbirth can be deadly, no matter how close to the Iron Throne you are; systemic misogyny rules supreme; House Targaryen can get away with nearly any misdeed imaginable, and its members care little for the smallfolk (and most don’t think of them at all). Plus, those fearsome dragons are living, fire-breathing nuclear weapons waiting to take flight and lay siege to their enemies—and probably some loyal civilians, too, if they happen to be in the line of fire.

It’s about to get even worse, as the Dance of the Dragons will soon unleash seven hells onto the rest of Westeros. Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and his dragon Vhagar may have delivered the first blow, and Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) may have hired goons that fumbled an assassination. King Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) may have directed his grief-fueled wrath toward every rat catcher who worked in the Red Keep to ensure he killed the one responsible for his son’s murder. Ser Arryk and Ser Erryk Cargyll (Luke and Elliott Tittensor, respectively) are now dead after a fight to the death formed through duty and honor, a suicide mission, brotherhood, and unspeakable guilt as Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) watched the carnage unfold.

<![CDATA[‘Land of Women’: Eva Longoria’s New Show Is ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’ With Mobsters]]>
Apple TV+

When she’s not directing movies about Flamin' Hot Cheetos, Eva Longoria’s niche is glamorous, high-energy dramedies. It’s what catapulted her to fame in Desperate Housewives, and it’s how she tried to launch a second act with the short-lived NBC sitcom Telenovela. Now she’s bringing that glossy energy back to TV in her new Apple TV+ series Land of Women—a watchable, if imbalanced limited series about a family of women escaping to Spanish wine country to flee a crime boss.

Loosely based on Sandra Barneda’s 2015 novel La Tierra de las Mujeres and unfolding in a mix of Spanish and English, Land of Women has been specifically engineered to suit Longoria’s zippy comedic skill set. (She’s also an executive producer.) She plays Gala Scott, a wealthy New York wine-shop owner living a dream life of privilege and luxury—until two thugs come knocking on her door, demanding the $15 million that her husband owes their boss. With her bank accounts drained and her husband nowhere to be found, Gala hawks her jewelry, grabs her teenage daughter Kate (Victoria Bazua) and her aging mother Julia (Carmen Maura), and jets off to the last place anyone would think to look for them: her mom’s childhood home in the tiny remote town of La Muga, Spain.

It's a homecoming that, improbably enough, sits somewhere between a cheesy Hallmark Christmas movie and a quirky Pedro Almodóvar melodrama. With her high-strung attitude, Gala slots right into the Hallmark mold of a prissy big-city-gal who needs to find her true self in a small town, complete with an enemies-to-lovers flirtation with hunky vineyard manager Amat (Santiago Cabrera). But the show also embraces a more wistful, whimsical tone as Julia reconnects to a homeland she hasn’t revisited in over four decades. Sun-drenched flashbacks contrast Julia’s free-spirited youth with the more grounded but no less vivacious person she’s become as she’s gotten older.

It’s not just you—full-body deodorants really are popping up everywhere, just in time for summer. But you may be wondering, what exactly is a body deodorant, and do I actually need one? I was curious, too, so I decided to get 411 straight from the experts. According to Blair Murphy-Rose, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, “Full body deodorants are designed to control and mask odor in all external sites of the body.” In other words, they’re formulated to address a larger region of the body—not just your underarms—and they also offer off-label uses, including reducing chafing and preventing itch.

As with many traditional deodorants, full-body deodorants are not antiperspirants and do not contain aluminum salts to half perspiration. However, just like natural deodorants, while full-body formulas do lack aluminum, many of them are still formulated with alternative moisture-blocking ingredients to keep sweat and odor at bay. “[Many body deodorants contain] clays or powders to wick moisture, unlike aluminum salts [which] block perspiration,” says Dr. Murphy-Rose.

A Republican state lawmaker who was arrested last week in Michigan claims he was set up—but provided no evidence as to the alleged effort to orchestrate his downfall, nor the shadowy figures supposedly behind the conspiracy.

Details surrounding state Rep. Neil Friske’s arrest in Lansing in the early hours of Thursday morning remained hazy nearly a week later. Police responding to reports of possible shots fired took him into custody around 2:45 a.m., with a police spokesperson saying he was suspected of “a felony-level offense.”

The Michigan Information and Research Service, a local independent news outlet, cited anonymous sources in reporting that the incident had allegedly involved Friske chasing an adult dancer after a disagreement while brandishing a gun.

Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/Getty Images

The defeat of Rep. Jamaal Bowman in New York sends a clear message to current and aspiring progressive politicians throughout the country: that antisemitism is not only bad morals, it’s also bad politics.

As the first member of the so-called “Squad” to lose in a Democratic primary, Bowman’s downward spiral and ultimate unseating must now serve as a clarion call for the rest of the left. Our movement for progress, our work to advance social, racial, economic, gender, and environmental justice in America, will fail if we do not work to eradicate the malignant antisemitism metastasizing within it.

It has been shocking to see that some who recklessly claim the mantle of progressivism are the most unapologetic in their indifference—or sometimes, malevolence—toward Jewish suffering, trauma, and victimization.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY)—a Squad member and fierce opponent of Israel’s campaign against Hamas in Gaza—has lost his primary, marking a huge win for the country’s U.S. backers, who spent nearly $15 million to boost his Democratic rival George Latimer.

Multiple outlets called the race some 40 minutes after polls closed in the district spanning the north edge of the Bronx and adjacent suburbs.

Bowman had failed to pull sufficient votes in his urban bases to overcome Latimer, who serves as Westchester County executive. With more than $22 million spent across both camps and supportive political action committees, the primary was the costliest in American history, and marked a dispute not just between pro-Israel and anti-Israel factions but between the progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic Party itself.

When the going got tough, Rep. Lauren Boebert fled east—a gambit that paid off handsomely on Tuesday night, when she was projected to trump a crowded field and win the Republican primary in her shiny new congressional district.

The Associated Press called the race just before 7:30 p.m. Colorado time, announcing Boebert had collected slightly more than 43 percent of the vote. The wire noted that the far-right firebrand’s infamy and combative style had been key to her success, which had been far from certain.

Marred by a series of cringe-inducing scandals, Boebert leapfrogged six months ago from the 3rd District to the 4th, a more reliably red swath of the state left open by the departing Rep. Ken Buck, the 65-year-old Republican who cut his term short in March.

My makeup bag is full of committed relationships. There is the MAC eyeliner I’ve worn since I was a teenager, my favorite $5 Maybelline mascara, the MERIT Beauty blush that blends perfectly into my skin, and an Hourglass palette that gives me a gorgeous glow. But, try as I may, I’m very non-committal when it comes to foundation.

It’s not that there aren’t any number of amazing foundations out there. In truth, I’ve tried many that I have liked and grown accustomed to, but inevitably, there comes a time when the novelty wears off, and I start to notice that my skin looks blotchy, tired, shiny, oily, and greasy. Plus, as I’ve grown older, I’ve become more aware of the importance of daily sunscreen use, which is why I typically prefer foundations, tinted creams, and tinted serums that include a broad-spectrum SPF.

President Joe Biden’s campaign spokesperson dismissed Donald Trump’s demand for a drug test prior to Thursday’s debate as a “silly” tactic that doesn’t sit well with voters—and noted that the former president made the same request when matched up against Hillary Clinton eight years ago.

Adrienne Elrod, after being asked by CNN anchor Boris Sanchez on Tuesday to respond to Trump’s attack, chalked it up as evidence that the presumptive GOP nominee is struggling to find a winning campaign issue.

“I mean, I don‘t even really know what to say about that. I worked on Hillary Clinton‘s campaign. She had also debated him very effectively. He accused her of being on drugs. President Biden defeated Donald Trump twice in previous debates,” Elrod said.

On July 9, one of Jeff Bezos’ two 22-seat Gulfstream G650ERs will deliver him to Sun Valley in Idaho for America’s most concentrated annual gathering of power. On arrival, he is sure to see an old friend: Don Graham, the former publishing magnate and son of Katharine.

Graham sold Bezos the Washington Post, his family’s paper since 1933, for $250m in 2013 in a deal structured at Sun Valley. “I do not know a finer man,” Bezos said of him at the time. He was full of optimism: Graham had sold him on the idea that he could change journalism. But after some initial success, Bezos now owns a paper that lost $77m last year. Its audience has halved since the “Trump bump” of the late 2010s. And Will Lewis, the British CEO to whom he turned to jump-start his title, has become the subject of a reporting frenzy.

Now new revelations are severely challenging Lewis’ account of his past, and bringing into question how much Bezos could have known about the man he hoped would fix the Post.

The conviction will surely cause their roster of high-profile connections to pull back from the family, which remains Britain’s wealthiest clan. The Sunday Times pegs their net worth at more than $45 billion. (Forbes estimates a more modest $20 billion.)

Prakash Hinduja, who chairs the European operation of the family’s namesake conglomerate, received a four-and-a-half-year sentence, as did his wife, Kamal. Their son Ajay received a four-year sentence, alongside his wife, Namrata.

The local governor of Russia’s Dagestan region fired a prominent politician in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “United Russia” party on Monday after reports surfaced that his sons and nephews were involved in the deadly attack in Dagestan over the weekend.

Russian authorities had detained and interrogated the politician, Magomed Omarov, the head of Dagestan’s Sergokalinsky district, on Sunday in connection to his relatives’ alleged involvement, according to TASS. He was let go but was detained again for “petty hooliganism,” according to a source in the security services, according to RIA Novosti, Mash, and other popular Russian language Telegram channels.

Five suspects have already been killed or “eliminated,” Russia’s Investigative Committee announced. Two of those “liquidated” were Omarov’s son, 31-year-old Osman Omarov, and his nephew, 36-year-old Ali Zakarigaev, according to a Russian security service source, RIA Novosti reported. His 37-year-old son Adil Omarov was also killed, according to Komsomolskaya Pravda, along with his other nephew, 32-year-old Abdusamad Amadziev, according to Baza.

After an unprecedented three-day hearing, in which she indulged Donald Trump’s far-fetched legal arguments about the validity of special counsels and needled prosecutors’ request for a gag order, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon once again gave the ex-president a leg up by drawing out a ruling in his classified documents case.

On Monday, nearly four full weeks after Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a motion to prohibit Trump from inciting violence against the FBI agents investigating him, Cannon finally heard arguments from both sides. But—frustratingly, to prosecutors—she wrapped the hearing on Tuesday without issuing a ruling and she was not expected to anytime soon, leaving Trump free to lash out during Thursday’s presidential debate.

“I’m not surprised that Judge Cannon is delaying ruling on the gag order,” former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told The Daily Beast on Tuesday. “She’s delayed this case and ruled in Trump’s favor at almost every possible turn. She’s entertained arguments that no other judge would, and even allowed outsiders to submit briefs and argue in the case. Unfortunately, this latest delay is just par for the course for her, and another example of why she’s in over her head.”

One of the three millionaire realtor brothers facing sexual assault allegations has temporarily stepped down from the billion-dollar brokerage firm he co-owns to “clear his name” following a new lawsuit that alleges he raped a woman.

“Given the salacious nature of this false allegation and impact on OFFICIAL, Tal and his partners have decided he will take a leave from the company to focus fully on clearing his name,” one of Tal Alexander’s lawyers, Deanna Paul, said in a statement to The Daily Beast on Tuesday.

The statement added that Alexander is “eager for the case to be heard in federal court as soon as possible and rejoin the OFFICIAL team in short order.”
