Ghostbusters fans are going to have a big day on July 15. A crowdfunded documentary about the legacy and fandom of the seminal comedy franchise is landing on Netflix that day, aligning with the theatrical release of Paul Feig's female-led Ghostbusters reboot.

Named after the Ghostbusters fandom, Ghostheads examines how the supernatural movies have affected fans in the three decades since the first film's release. The documentary includes interviews with notable cast members and creatives behind the beloved franchise, including Dan Aykroyd, Ivan Reitman, Ernie Hudson, and Feig, as well as inspiring stories from the fan community about how Ghostbusters has empowered viewers to live better lives.

Ghostheads debuted as a work in progress at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, and has gone on to complete production thanks in large part to fan contributions on crowdfunding websites Kickstarter and IndieGogo. The doc is directed by Ghostbusters superfan Brendan Mertens, and produced by fellow fans Tommy Avallone and Lee Leshen.

"Ghostheads are friendly people — there's not really any animosity like in other fandoms we've seen," Mertens said in a statement. "They really use their powers for good — raising money for their local communities, providing a place for people who may otherwise feel alone, and visiting children's hospitals in full gear."

Of course, it's impossible to ignore that some Ghostbusters fans have very vocally derided the concept of the upcoming reboot. The team behind Ghostheads, however, is embracing the new movie by including interviews with Feig and encouraging viewers to see it.

"We'd love people to go and see the reboot, and then, kick back with a nice frosty Ecto-Cooler and watch our movie at home so they can see how the film has impacted the lives of so many," Leshen said in a statement. "Who knows? Maybe we'll help some people find their own inner Ghosthead!"
