Judd Apatow: Ghostbusters haters overlap with Donald Trump supporters

Judd Apatow is throwing his support behind the new Ghostbusters movie — and suggesting that the film’s critics may have something in common with the supporters of a certain presidential candidate.

“I would assume there’s a very large crossover of people who are doubtful Ghostbusters will be great and people excited about the Donald Trump candidacy,” Apatow told Uproxx. “I would assume they are the exact same people. That movie is made by the great Paul Feig and stars the funniest people on Earth, so I couldn’t be more excited.”

Apatow added that the negative buzz about Paul Feig’s female-led Ghostbusters stems from a small, very vocal minority.

“I think people have paid too much attention to just some angry trolls,” he said. “And it will be judged on its own greatness. I don’t think anything really matters the way you think it does. The movie comes out, and it will be great, and people will just be happy to have it. It’s not like anybody really cares about a couple of idiots who hold onto the idea that things never evolve. I always think, you know, we have our past and if you can come up with a new, cool way to do something, then that’s exciting and hopefully it will make a lot of people happy.”

Both Feig and the Ghostbusters cast have fired back at misogynistic comments about the film, and over the weekend, star Melissa McCarthy commented on the backlash, saying that she hopes Ghostbusters haters “find a friend.” Last month, Feig penned a lengthy statement decrying the online “bullies” who “write misogyny and hate and threats.”

“God bless the true geeks of the world and here’s to taking our community back from the bullies,” he wrote.
