'Game of Thrones': Sophie Turner takes six Sansa questions

It’s hard to find a happier person on the Game of Thrones set than Sophie Turner. Which is weird because she plays the most depressed character on the show — Sansa Stark, who keeps losing family members to the Lannisters, and now even has to put up with being married to one too. We asked Turner six questions about Sansa and season 4, which gets underway April 6:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I read you love Jersey Shore, Honey Boo Boo, and Keeping Up with The Kardashians— I bet you wouldn’t watch Game of Thrones if you weren’t on it.

Sophie Turner: Well, yeah probably! I’m more into like trashy reality trash shows- that’s the kind of shows that I like. The one fiction show I watch is Hannibal. I love it! I missed the last episode—it didn’t record on my TV but I watched all the way up to the penultimate episode [of season 1] and it’s amazing.

When this season opens, you must not be doing very well in the wake of everything that’s happened—you’re sad Sansa.

Turner: Yes, I’m sad Sansa. I just found out that my brother and mother are dead. She’s a bit of a loner, not in a good place.

You’re a very happy person yet you play character who’s sad 90 percent of the time.

Turner: You’ve got to be happy when you play a sad character, otherwise you just get depressed. Make your real life as fun as possible.

I loved your line last season: “The truth is always either terrible or boring.”

Turner: Yeah, it’s so true! That was my favorite line. I think she always has good lines each season. And then there was: “There are no heroes; in life, the monsters always win.”

You go to another wedding, Joffrey and Margaery—which Sansa is probably not particularly looking forward to.

Turner: She’s not happy about it. I mean she’s not gonna be happy for a long time because you know, half her family is dead. And she’s not really in the mood for celebrating love, which is kind of falsified anyway. By now she’s just super tired of the world—no one likes her anymore. There’s just nothing for her. There’s nothing that she can do with her life now. She’s kind of given up. I mean what is she supposed to do? She’s in an unhappy marriage. Her parents are dead. And she’s witnessing the marriage of two people, one who she loves, and one who she hates.

Beyond the wedding, can you give an overview of your character’s journey this season?

Turner: This is the best season for me. Sansa kind of takes a very unexpected path both for viewers and for her and she just kind of … she learns a lot this season and she becomes her own person instead of relying on Margaery or Cersei’s influence as in the past seasons. She develops her own personality and her own way of being, if you will. And she just totally transforms. It’s just gonna be a really good season, and I just think there’s a lot of kind of twists in it. It’s more than just the normal Game of Thrones.
