How to Update Software on Nintendo Switch

Applies to:  Nintendo Switch Family, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch - OLED Model

Follow these steps to automatically or manually download and install the latest version of software on Nintendo Switch.

Note: If a software update is available when the Nintendo Switch console is connected online, you will be prompted to download it upon starting the game or application.

Complete these steps

  • Automatic installation
    1. Select System Settings from the HOME Menu.
    2. Navigate to the System section, then set the Auto-Update Software option to On. Updates to installed software will be downloaded automatically while the Nintendo Switch system is connected to the Internet.
      • How to connect a Nintendo Switch to a wireless home network
        1. Place the Nintendo Switch within 10 feet of the wireless router to ensure a strong wireless signal.
        2. Select Settings from the HOME Menu System Settings icon highlighted on the HOME Menu Screen on the Nintendo Switch console.
        3. Select Internet, and then Internet Settings Internet is selected on the System Settings menu on the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch will automatically search for near-by Wi-Fi signals.
        4. Select the appropriate network name (SSID) from the list.
        5. If prompted, use the onscreen keyboard to enter the network's wireless password Onscreen keyboard displayed when a network's wireless password is required.
        6. The Nintendo Switch will test the Internet connection. Once the test is complete, select OK to complete the process.

  • Manual installation
    1. Check that the Nintendo Switch console is connected to the Internet.
    2. From the HOME Menu, select the icon for the software you wish to update without starting the game or application. The software icon for 1-2-Switch being highlighted on the Nintendo Switch Home Menu screen
    3. Press the + or - Button on your controller.
    4. Select Software Update followed by Via the Internet. Via the Internet selected in the Software Update option highlighted on the 1-2-Switch Software screen
