In The Heights star Anthony Ramos is set to lead the summer blockbuster Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, out now in theaters. But he got his start after landing a career-defining role in Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s hit musical, Hamilton. And he just so happened to get the news the very same day he was laid off.

Ramos shared the “wild” story of how he learned the news during a recent appearance on Sherri. Host Sherri Shepherd had mentioned that he landed Hamilton “at the perfect time” in his life.

“I got fired from a job, actually. I was doing a show at Radio City Music Hall that was the equivalent of the Christmas Spectacular,” he explained. “They asked me to sing in that show, and I said amazing, I could pay my rent.” He added that he was secretly auditioning for Hamilton while working on the show, which was called Hearts and Lights.

Ramos explained that he returned to work after his final audition for Hamilton, where the show’s cast learned they were being laid off.

“It was wild,” he recalled. “But then a few hours later I got a call from the casting company that does Hamilton and they were like, ‘We heard you got fired, so pull up.'”

The actor and performer joked that they called that Radio City Music Hall show “Broken Hearts and Shattered Lights.”

Ramos landed the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in an off-Broadway production of the hit musical at The Public Theater in 2014. The show soon moved to Broadway the next year. He later left production in 2016 but returned for the stage recording that came out on Disney+ in 2020, for which he earned his first Primetime Emmy nomination for best supporting actor.

Landing the role opened many doors for the performer. He later got cast in Spike Lee‘s She’s Gotta Have It and reprised his role of Usnavi for Miranda’s blockbuster musical, In The Heights.

“It’s amazing one door closes and you just gotta know another door will open,” Shepherd said.

“Yeah you just gotta have faith, just keep going and have faith,” Ramos replied.
