New Movies on Demand: ‘First Man,’ ‘The Hate U Give,’ ‘mid90s,’ and More

Another Friday, another work week almost over, and another weekend about to begin. If you don’t feel like braving the cold outdoors, I feel you! Why go outside in layers of sweaters and coats when you can keep warm in your living room, illuminated by the light of a TV playing a bunch of new movies? Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover.

This weekend, you can turn on Jonah Hill’s critically-acclaimed film mid90s, a coming-of-age story that the Oscar-nominated actor directed himself. The film, unsurprisingly set in mid-’90s LA, is now available to rent. Also available to rent is the Ike Barinholtz/Tiffany Haddish dark comedy The Oath. Can this family survive a Thanksgiving dinner where conversation legally has to get political? Find out for just a few bucks! And if you’re in need of some silly laughs and really want to commit, you can purchase Rowan Atkinson’s spy spoof sequel Johnny English Strikes Again.

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of historical dramas, political dramas, and action movies now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

First Man

This Neil Armstrong biopic drops Ryan Gosling in the titular role and re-teams him with Oscar-winning La La Land director Damien Chazelle. The film chronicles Armstrong’s journey to the moon in 1969 and also stars Claire Foy as his wife Janet, and Corey Stoll as Buzz Aldrin. The film could be a must-watch for those of you interested in the Academy Awards race, as Foy was nominated for a Golden Globe and Justin Hurwitz won for his original score. You can buy First Man right now, or you can wait and rent it on January 22.

The Hate U Give

This acclaimed drama adapts a revolutionary YA novel from 2017 about a young girl who witnesses her friend get shot by a police officer. The novel, inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, turned into an equally powerful film lead by a fearless turn from breakout star Amandla Stenberg. The film also stars Regina Hall, K.J. Apa, Common, Anthony Mackie, and Issa Rae. You’ll be able to rent The Hate U Give on January 22.
