De Prins draagt het kostuum dat hem enige dagen later door een Londense kleermaker werd geleverd, niet evenwel de gouden degen, die Karel I hem de avond voor zijn vertrek uit Londen (4 juni) aanbood. Het portret moet dus tijdens 's Prinsen verblijf in Engeland zijn begonnen. De opzet is van Van Dyck (brief van Lady Roxburgh aan Brederode, 13 aug. 1641(?)), waarin zij schrijft dat Van Dyck gewerkt heeft aan het portret van de kinderen van Amalia van Oranje, door ziekte weinig heeft kunnen werken). Aan de voltooing zou Peter Lely hebben meegewerkt. Hanneman heeft er niet aangewerkt.O.
